On Saturday, June 11, the WingHouse of Daytona Beach overflowed with boxing fans, circus fans, and curious minds alike to witness the spectacle known as Mike Tyson. Most made their exit shocked by the result. Once the most fearsome fighter in the fistic arts, Tyson's tattooed mug read as an epilogue to his own saga.
In his first bout since falling victim to a pummelling by Brit Danny Williams nearly a full year ago, Tyson (50-6 44K0) seemed more sluggish than slugger. His opponent this time was Irishman Kevin McBride, who at 6-foot-5 and 271 pounds is more imposing by size than skill. Over 15,000 packed The MCI Center in Washington DC for the event.
Tyson, unsurprisingly, came out ferocious, throwing wild hooks with both hands at the taller man. Some landed, but it was obvious his speed and power has diminished over the years. After a first round won by the former champion, many believed McBride would meet the mat in the upcoming minutes. Each mauled his way through the first four rounds, though, before a foul-filled fifth.
In the sixth round, it became evident that Tyson no longer wanted to fight. He resorted to rough-housing the Ireland native and was warned for blows below the belt. At one point during a clinch, Tyson intentionally tried to break McBride's arm. He then had two points deducted by referee Joe Cortez for a headbutt that opened a gash over McBride's left eye. At the bell, the unheralded McBride shoved Tyson to the mat. Leaning against the ropes, Iron Mike Tyson's expression said it all: "I'm done."
The bout was ruled in McBride's favor, swelling his record to 34-4-1 with 28 knockouts after Tyson threw in the towel between the sixth and seventh rounds. Two of the three official judges had the fight scored in Tyson's favor before his forfeit. He spent time with the press afterward and basically gave the impression that his roller coaster career is now over. The train wreck that is Tyson has finally stationed.
Ali, Mitchell Victorious: On the undercard, Laila Ali pounded an overmatched Erin Toughill for a third round knockout. Muhammad Ali's daughter is 21-0. Also, Sharmba Mitchell defeated Chris Smith after a headbutt in the fifth round opened two gruesome cuts around Mitchell's left eye. Mitchell won by unanimous decision.
Boxing After Dark: Almazbek "Kid Diamond" Raiymkulov and Joel Casamayor fought to an unpopular split decision draw that should have propelled Kid's record to 21-0. Miguel Cotto scored a TKO over Muhammad Abdullaev after Abdullaev's submission in the ninth round.
