Tarver Hopes to Settle Score With Johnson
2005-06-17
Article Written by: Joe Holzer

Glencoffe Johnson will defend his Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight title this Saturday against the man he won it from last December. Antonio Tarver hopes to end the bout inside the scheduled twelve rounds rather than chancing being the victim or another controversial split decision. The Fed-Ex Arena in Memphis, Tennessee hosts the sequel to one of last years best fights.

After each fighter conquered self-proclaimed "Superman" Roy Jones, Jr. last year, each relinquished his alphabet-soup belt to clueless organizations resulting in the best light heavyweight match possible at that time. Tarver, owning the linear championship, strutted to the ring wearing a crown and robe. Johnson, "The Road Warrior", was also without a trinket.

Tarver (22-3 18K0), dubbed "The Magic Man", was upset by the journeyman in a split decision victory in Johnson's favor. The constant pressure of Johnson (42-9-2 28KO) combined with Tarver's laziness in the championship rounds were likely reasons for the outcome, though many believe the southpaw should have retained his title.

Another great show by these two fighters will raise the winner a few rungs on the pound-for-pound ladder. Number one on that list, middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins has expressed interest in meeting whoever leaves with the title.

On the undercard, Ike "Bazooka" Quartey (35-2-1 30KO) returns to the squared circle to face the tough Verno Phillips (38-9-1 20KO) in a nice junior middleweight matchup. Beginning at 10:00pm, this program is available to HBO subscribers and can be seen at the WingHouse of Daytona.
