DBCC Women’s Center Received Child Care Funds

U.S. Department of Education Awards CCAMPIS Program Grant Proposal

The U. S. Department of Education has awarded $378,440 to the Daytona Beach Community College Women’s Center to administer the Child Care Access Means Parents In School (CCAMPIS) program beginning October 1, 2006 through September 30, 2010.

The purpose of the CCAMPIS Program is to support low-income parents in their pursuit of postsecondary education by providing campus-based child care services. Funds are used to support or establish campus-based child care programs primarily serving the needs of low-income students enrolled in an institute of higher education.

Access to affordable child care is a common barrier for non-traditional college students. A recent survey of DBCC students revealed that 49 percent of the respondents had children or stepchildren ranging in age from birth to seventeen years; and over 15 percent stated that securing acceptable child and dependent care was a problem. Additionally, 18 percent named the cost of childcare or other dependent care as a problem in attending classes (Faces of the Future Survey, 2003-2004).

“This is an excellent opportunity for us to provide low-income parents greater access to higher education opportunities through DBCC,” stated Isalene Montgomery, Dean of the Women’s Center/Center for Education and Alternative Resources. “In order to remain competitive and to enhance the services that are available to our students, childcare assistance plays a vital role in this process. We look forward to helping students find affordable, accessible, and accredited childcare through the CCAMPIS program!” Students will have access to this service on all five DBCC campuses: Daytona Beach, DeLand, Deltona, New Smyrna Beach, and Flagler/Palm Coast. Previously the program was only offered in the Flagler/Palm Coast area.

In order to receive assistance, students must be Federal Pell grant eligible. These students will have access to a variety of services: licensed and accredited childcare facilities, family and relationship classes, tutoring and mentoring through TRIO Student Support Services and other services provided through DBCC and the Women’s Center.
