Volusia FCAT Writing Scores Increase

Elementary and Middle Scores at All Time High

DELAND-- The School District of Volusia County's 2006 FCAT writing scores at grades 4 and 8 increased over 2005 scores and grade 10 scores remained stable. The grade 8 average score met the 4.0 mark for the first time in the history of the FCAT Writing program and grade 4 scores are at an all time high.

Scores are reported for all curriculum groups and cannot be used to predict school grades. Caution should be used in making direct comparisons, as writing prompts change from year to year.

  • Grade 4 – 56% of students scored at level 4 or higher
  • Grade 8 – 72% of students scored at level 4 or higher
  • Grade 10 – 61% of students scored at level 4 or higher
Longitudinally, district and state scores have increased substantially over time. "FCAT Writing scores have increased dramatically since the test was first administered in 1993," said Superintendent Dr. Margaret Smith. "In 1993, only 18% of grade 4 students scored at level 3 or higher. For the last three years, that percentage has been closer to 90%."
