Swimming lessons for all ages at DBCC

(Daytona Beach, Fla. 08/22/06) - From six-months to 18+ years of age, the American Red Cross "Learn to Swim" programs at Daytona Beach Community College are designed to teach all ages to swim and be safe around aquatic environments. The programs are broken into seven levels, starting with water adjustment skills and advancing to competitive stroke perfection. Water safety is stressed and taught to all participants. All instructors have been certified as American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors. The first session of classes runs for four weeks beginning Sept. 14 and ranges in price from $25 to $35.

* Aquatic Exploration is designed to introduce children ages six months to 23 months to the basic swimming skills. Parent accompaniment in the water is required. Classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4:30 to 5 p.m. Cost $25.

* Aquatic Adventure will introduce children ages two to three years to the fundamentals of swimming. Parent accompaniment in the water is required. Classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 5:15 to 5:45 p.m. Cost $25.

* Aquatic Journey teaches children ages four through seven the fundamentals of swimming and basic water safety skills. Children are grouped by skill level with a student-instructor ratio not to exceed 5:1. Classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays, at two different times - sign-up for either: 4:30 - 5 p.m. or 5:15 - 5:45 p.m. Cost $30.

* Aquatic Challenge offers seven levels ranging from beginner to advanced. Participants, ages eight to 12 and 13 to 17, are evaluated on the first day to determine their group placement. Participants learn stroke techniques, proper breathing, personal water safety skills and methods of basic water rescue. Classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Cost $35.

* Adult Swimming focuses on making the swimmer more comfortable in the water, learning different strokes and building endurance. Classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Cost $35.

A second session for each "Learn to Swim" classes will be offered Oct. 24 to Nov. 16.

The water aerobic sessions will provide people of all ages the opportunity to burn calories, increase strength and flexibility, tone-up, improve the cardiovascular system, and get more fit overall. Water aerobics offers lower injury risk while working the entire body in a very different way then it is accustomed to. Water provides natural resistance and the intensity is varied by alternating between shallow and deep areas. A low-impact exercise often used by pregnant women, people recovering from an injury, and people with arthritis. Classes are held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and are free with an Aquatic/Fitness Center Membership; cost $3 per class or $30 for the four-week long session.

The Aquatic Center at DBCC features a 25-yard by 25-meter indoor heated pool and is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., closed Sundays and on all college holidays. Any other closures will be posted at least one week in advance.

The Aquatic Center is located in the L. Gale Lemerand Center (Bldg. 310) on the Daytona Beach Campus. For additional information about the "Learn to Swim" programs or water aerobic classes, call (386) 506-4386.
