It would be difficult if not impossible to classify yourself as a fan or even a supporter of local music if you weren't already familiar with The Scene . At 8:00 p.m. every Sunday for the past two years, 95.7FM (The Hog) has been working harder than anyone to bring local music to the people of Daytona, and the fruit of that labor is The Scene. This radio show not only gives local acts air time and an on-air phone interview, it also gives listeners the chance to then attend an hour-long live show that takes place at Finnegan's Beachside in Flagler Beach. What more could you ask for?
The Scene is the brainchild of Tim Finnegan and Frank Scott of the 95.7FM, WHOG "Daytona’s Classic Rock Station." When Scott realized that there was no outlet for local bands in the Volusia and Flagler County areas he took it upon himself to remedy the problem. With the help and dedication of Tattoo Todd , the former host of Metal ‘til Midnight, the two implemented their plan and "The Scene" was born.
Granted, over the past two years there have been several changes to format, venue, lineup and more, but through it all The Scene and all the dedicated hard workers behind the scenes have stayed true to the show's original intention. Initially, the show featured two local artists each week with airplay and an interview, which was then followed by an hour long set at Finnegan's in Daytona Beach, but it was when The Scene made the move up to Finnegan's Beachside location that it quickly picked up steam. In October of 2005, the band Stemm Cell played The Scene and their drummer Dan Lang quickly bonded and formed a friendship with Tattoo Todd . Shortly thereafter, Dan became Todd's assistant and began helping him book and promote the show. As a member of an all-original local band, Dan knew from personal experience that The Scene was probably the greatest outlet for promotion and exposure.
Together Todd and Dan sought out and booked bands like Take Notice, No Harm Done, Greater Grey, Feedback, The Skeeterz, Lost In Progress, Butch Ryan and Groovy Cool and many more. After a month in Flagler Beach, the format changed once again, to include a house band every week, and Stemm Cell Dan's "My Two Cents" feature was started as well. It was decided after much discussion that The House Band would be a band from the immediate area that could help to draw people to the show and build up a fan base. Thus far, the house bands have included The Antics , from Deland and IS from Daytona Beach. Then Stemm Cell from Palm Coast contributed a bit of metal, D.E.G.A.S . (also from Palm Coast) added what they dub "Ghetto Metal" and The Craig Kamm Band from New Smyrna Beach rounded out The Scene by bringing in a little bit of country. The "My Two Cents" was designed to highlight happenings around the local scene—show dates, new album releases and such. In this segment, Dan also provides informative websites that he thought would be beneficial to the local bands, and he spotlights one original band. This spotlight is usually given to a band who is either from out of the area or who just deserves special mention. His favorite Spotlight Bands so far have included Through You, The American Tragedy, Cori Yarckin, Megaphone and Bleed The Dream just to name a few.
Since Tattoo Todd has moved on to pursue other interests, Stemm Cell Dan is now the producer and booking agent for The Scene. His most recent bookings include Mohave who was named Band of the Year for SSA, This Solemn Vow who recently signed to Roadside Attraction Records and Bravo Armada. His future shows will include several touring bands to complement the strong local bands that are all over our scene. As proof of our own dedication to the local music scene, we at What's Happening Daytona would like to take this opportunity to mention (and by mention we mean plug) our own involvement with The Scene. In the near future we will be working in conjunction with 95.7FM The Hog to give these local bands even more exposure than they are already receiving. Each week, before the show on Sunday, we will be spotlighting one of the three bands that are playing, and we will post show reviews from each and every Scene show. Also, if the bands choose to participate, we will be adding their photo, bio, website and song of choice to our new Local Music Player, along with a link where fans can purchase CDs. We are looking forward to this partnership with Stemm Cell Dan and 95.7FM The Hog, and hope that we can help to bring some of our local talent to the next level.
