ABOUT SILK ’N STEEL
Silk ’n Steel is a classic and modern rock band based in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Formed in 2003, Silk ’n Steel specializes in danceable rock and pop
hits from the 70’s through today. There will not be four sets of three-chord
bar songs for this band, as the group selects songs that most other local bands
wouldn’t attempt to cover. Their thick vocal harmonies, strong set-list
and high-energy stage presence have kept the band in demand and working steadily
since their inception.
By playing local rock clubs, restaurants, sports pubs, biker bars and special
events sponsored by the area cities, Silk ’n Steel has earned a respectable
and loyal fan following through the years - although the band uses the term
"fan" loosely. "We consider the people who come to see and hear us our friends",
says singer and band-leader Vicky Kay. She adds, "because without them, we
are nothing".
MEET SILK ’N STEEL
Vicky Kay - Silk ’n Steel is powered by former DeepSlick singer Vicky Kay.
With her Stevie Nicks/Janis Joplin-influenced vocal style and a high-energy
stage presence, Vicky has established herself as one of Daytona’s favorite
rock singers.
Originally from Rockford, Illinois, Vicky starting working professionally in
1999 as the lead singer for DeepSlick, a Daytona-based band that enjoyed a
strong three-year run and established the core following of friends that has
carried over to Silk ’n Steel. In 2003, Vicky (along with her drummer Kevin
Smith) left the group to form Silk ’n Steel.
Vicky’s diversity allows her to cover anything from Aimee Mann to Ozzy Osbourne,
and everything else in between. Of course, the highlight of every Silk ’n Steel
show is Vicky’s incredible mini-tribute to the music of Stevie Nicks.
By popular demand, Vicky is also fronting a recently-formed Fleetwood Mac tribute
band called The Chain, who will start performing in the Daytona area in 2007.
Gary Mobley - Driving the band musically is guitarist/singer Gary Mobley,
who came to Daytona from Jacksonville, Florida and now calls Ormond Beach home.
He has worked in many bands over the years including Bold City and The Never
(Jacksonville) and was also a core member of DeepSlick and Perfect Crime before
joining Silk ’n Steel.
Gary’s strong voice and high vocal range is an added asset to the band, and
his fans will simply not allow him to leave the stage without performing his
specialty, the music of David Gilmour and Pink Floyd, which quite frankly
has to be heard to be believed.
Gary and his wife Alicia are expecting their first child in December.
Robert Wolff - Keyboardist-extraordinaire Robert Wolff is originally from Buffalo, NY. He
spent many years working the Buffalo/Niagara Falls club scene in bands including
Penelope, The Condemned and Northwood Fantasy.
This original Silk ’n Steel member serves as the bands musical director, a
position he inherited simply by his raw talent. His high-harmony vocal skills
are a key ingredient of the signature Silk ’n Steel vocal sound. Bob can play
any song, any style, any time and is the "musical glue" that holds the band
together.
Bela Zold - Bassist Bela Zold lays down the low-end groove for Silk ’n Steel.
His exceptional timing skills are an added asset to the band.
Originally from Hungary, Bela came to the United States after living in South
Africa for a time. He now calls Daytona Beach home.
Bela is quite diversified in his playing style. Whether rock, jazz, funk, progressive
or metal, Bela can nail it and make it look easy.
Bela also records with his son Dave in the all-original progressive/classical
band "Works". Their music can be heard at: www.myspace.com/worksmusic
Kevin Smith - Kevin’s rock-solid backbeat and his confident, groove-oriented
style serves as the backbone of Silk ’n Steel.
You will not get a drum solo out of him. No complicated, technical fills or
double-bass antics either. What you do get is a "get up and dance" groove
with lead/backing vocal harmonies attached.
Kevin’s responsibilities include reading the band's audiences, distinguishing
their varying musical tastes and adjusting the band's set-list accordingly.
He plays drums, sings and runs the band's sound-board - all at the same time!.
He arranges the band's signature vocal harmonies and handles the
marketing, promotional and internet aspects of the band.
Kevin is a founding member of DeepSlick, Silk 'n Steel and the Fleetwood
Mac tribute band "The Chain".
