THE SCENE, JUNE 25TH 2006 - "A "Wonderful" evening with Johnson & Bulford
This week on “The Scene”, we featured Wonderful Johnson from Naples, and The Johnny Bulford Band from Orlando. For the first time ever, the show was streamed live on the web at both www.whog.fm and www.blacksheepradio.net after being available to only Volusia and Flagler counties for two years. With WHOG upgrading their website to include live streaming, and Black Sheep Radio's participation as a major sponsor of the show, people from all over the world are now able to listen in.
The show opened at 9:00PM at Finnegan's Beachside Pub in Flagler Beach with The Johnny Bulford Band taking the stage. John is an extremely talented singer/songwriter in the Country genre. Though he recently turned 21, John exhumes maturity in his musical and personal approach. The band performed songs heard earlier on the radio program such as "Related To The Wrong People", "Scream", "Southern Thing" and "Just Like Us". The Johnny Bulford Band features John's sister Alicia on backing vocals. Alicia is a talented solo performer in her own right. She recently was named a finalist in the Colgate Country Showdown, and performs on her own around Central Florida. Rounding out the rest of the band was Rebecca Gaskins on Bass Guitar, Alex Gross on Drums, and Robert Chipley on Lead Guitar. Not performing on Sunday night, but very much a part of the Johnny Bulford Band is Dave LeGrande. John has such a great singing voice and writes such beautiful songs. This was the first time that we had seen the whole band play. John had played our show last year, but performed acoustically. Though a big fan of acoustic music, I think the audience at Finnegans appreciated seeing the entire band perform. The band has a big show at Orlando's Hard Rock Live on July 22nd with Sandstone. You can contact the Bulford camp for tickets at www.myspace.com/johnbulford, or check them out at www.newcountrystar.com. John is up for Favorite New Male Vocalist at the site, so drop by and vote for him.
Second up was Wonderful Johnson out of Naples, Florida. Fronted by Tim McGeary, the band is rounded out by Dan Wolkoff on Guitar and vocals, John Doria on drums, Dave Cujas on Bass and vocals, and Donna Smith on Keyboards and vocals. They play a straight up brand of Americana, Pop Rock. Tim's vocals are very strong, and are so well complimented by each member of the band. Each member sings, and I was highly impressed with their harmonies, as well as the all around musicianship of each member. The band played songs like "Take Me To The Water", "She Wants Me", "Low Man" and "How Much More" from their "Authentic Memphis Sammich" CD. As of late, Tim and the band have been touring tirelessly. Less than six weeks ago, Tim lost his 18 year old son. The occurrence has forced Tim to reflect back on his life, and to take the bull by the horns and just go for it. Touring is a way for Tim to put tragedy out of his mind, as well as allowing him to get back to what he loves best, performing. You can expect to hear a lot more from Wonderful Johnson in the coming months. The band has plans to return to the studio and work on a follow up to "Authentic Memphis Sammich". If you want to learn more about the band, please visit them at www.wonderfuljohnson.com or you can send them a message at My Space by going to www.myspace.com/6221323.
This coming Sunday, “The Scene” will be doing one of the things that we love best: A "Best Of" show. The Best Of show features what we feel are the strongest bands that have performed on our show over the past two years. If you have played our show, take a listen to 95.7FM this Sunday night at 8:00, you just might hear us play one of your songs. Unfortunately, when we run a "Best Of" show, that means there will be no live show this week. You can still head out to Finnegan's Beachside Pub on Sunday night for some other great entertainment. They have a great holiday weekend schedule planned.
Our next full show will be on Sunday, July 9th when we feature Shawn Fisher and Twisted Lemon from Jacksonville and we are very proud to have D.C. North coming in from Tampa to play this show as well. D.C. North has been featured on the Warped Tour, and are red hot right now on our scene. Check out all 3 bands by using the following links: www.myspace.com/shawnfisher, www.myspace.com/twistedlemontheband and finally at www.myspace.com/dcnorth.
If you can't check out The Scene on 95.7FM The Hog on Sunday night's, PLEASE go to www.blacksheepradio.net and listen to the show there every Sunday night at 8:00. We wanted to thank our sponsors: www.whatshappeningdaytona.com, www.blacksheepradio.net, www.jaxrock.com, and OverlorD Studios (www.myspace.com/overlord) for making all of this possible.
