Professional Biographical Sketch for Sal Ronci

in concert at the Bandshell, Sunday, June 4, 2006 – 6:00 pm

Sal Ronci is a performing musician (principal trumpet). His experiences include:  Director of Band, Orchestra, and Chorus, Composer and Arranger, Educator, Adjudicator, and Band Clinician. He holds both Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Miami.

Sal and his wife reside in Ormond Beach, Florida. He conducts his own 17- piece Big Band and 10-piece Jump-Swing Band. He is founding director of the Volusia Concert and Volusia Jazz Bands and of the Jazz Outreach Program. His bands perform regularly for special events at venues such as Daytona Beach Bandshell, City Island Park, Port Orange Amphitheater, International Speedway, Flagler Auditorium, and Peabody Auditorium. He has directed and coordinated several jazz clinics and concerts as part of  the Jazz Outreach program sponsored by the Friends of the Bandshell and the Volusia County Arts Council. In the Spring of 1999, he tutored and performed with the Spruce Creek High School Jazz Band in Bayonne, France.

In the late 50's Sal toured the country and Cuba with a popular recording group, the Coralaires, in which he served as arranger, vocalist and trumpeter. Working out of Miami, he later led his own groups in recording, television, radio, and performances in local clubs and concert venues in the South Florida area. These music activities continued until 1994 when Sal, and his wife Judy,  moved to Ormond Beach, Florida in 1994.

His bands have played for the  Florida International Festival Galas and have performed for the London Symphony welcoming reception for the last four festivals. The Sal Ronci Big Band opened the 2001 Florida International Festival at the Peaybody Auditorium with Bob Newhart. Also in that year, his Swing Band and Dixieland Band played for the Grand opening of Ocean Walk and the Grand re-opening of the Daytona Beach Bandshell. The same groups performed for the Grand Opening of  Ocean Hammocks Golf Club in Palm Coast, Florida. The Sal Ronci Big Band, featuting vocalist Linda Cole, performed concerts at the Flagler Auditorium, in connection with the Flagler Home Show, in 2002, 2003, and 2004. The Sal Ronci Swing Band was featured as the headliner performance group for the Halifax Art Festival in November, 2002. On January 25, 2003, The Sal Ronci Jazz Band presented "The Story Of Jazz" at the New Smyrna Beach Library as part of the "Friends of the Library" concert series. They also presented the program in April 2004 at the Daytona Beach Museum of Arts and Sciences. A CD of that live performance is now available and ordering information can be found on the Bandshell website www.bandshell.org

Sal is retired from the Dade County public Schools where he served as Band, Orchestra, Choral and Adult Jazz Lab Director for thirty years. He was Fine Arts Chairman at three secondary schools and was adjunct professor at Dade Community College during that tenure.
