As the Booking Agent and live show host for 95.7FM The Hog’s "The Scene", I am exposed to many bands from many different walks of life and genres.
Some bands have a strong following; some bands have very little following. Some bands are seasoned experienced units, while others might be using the show as a stage for their debut. That’s what the local/original music business is all about.
I heard about Sounds Amongst Silence through my 13-year-old son. While there were concerns that age might be an issue at the 18+ venue that hosts "The Scene", I engaged in some research anyway.
Much to my surprise, the band had over 18,000 profile views on My Space, and a strong fan following that is evidenced by the comments left by other users on the site.
When I contacted the band’s manager, James, about booking the band, he agreed that their fan base was young, but that they could probably bring in a decent crowd of fans that were over 18. On show night, they not only delivered the 18 and over fans, but more impressive to me was the amount of people under the age of 18 that had gathered outside of the venue. These kids were actually watching Sounds Amongst Silence play through the windows of the bar.
The band, a group of teenage men, displayed remarkable professionalism. Since their catalog is still developing, the band did not have a long list of songs ready for the show that night. The band does not rush to create new music. Each song is carefully crafted to fit their style. The band feels that the quality of their songs is much more important than the quantity – another display of maturity.
The night was a huge success for the band. The band powered through songs like "Goodnight", "Compromise" and "Last Few Years" and won over the crowd at the show. They shared the bill that night with a band from Jacksonville called The Picture Show. When Sounds Amongst Silence had finished their set, a representative from The Picture Show expressed concern over having to follow them up on stage that night. This is one of the largest compliments that a band can receive - especially coming from peers.
Sounds Amongst Silence formed in Ormond Beach back in 2003. The bands founders, Tom Clow and Mike Hudson, wanted to participate in a Battle Of The Bands that was taking place at their school. As simple as this may sound, they put a band together and entered the competition. Sounds Amongst Silence was born.
The experience went so well for them that they decided to continue and spread their music into the Volusia and Flagler County music scene.
The band has endured some lineup changes and full genre switches, but the Post Hardcore/Emo label is one that fits the band today. They are pure energy on stage, and use the Emo look much to their advantage. Their ability to draw in young fans (especially of the female persuasion) is unmatched for any band in their arena. Since the band is so young and new to the scene, their history remains to be written. The band’s lineup today consists of Tom Clow on keyboard and vocals, Mike Hudson on Lead Vocals and Guitar, Kevin on Bass and Bobby on Drums.
