The Seabreeze Metal Lounge
A Haven for the Local Musician
2005-12-20
Article Written by: Dan Lang

On almost any given night, if you find yourself in Daytona Beach looking for great original local music, you need look no further than The Seabreeze Metal Lounge , which is located at 322 Seabreeze Blvd. in Daytona Beach. Don't let the name fool you, though, this place offers just about every musical style you could ever ask for.

Club owner Rebecca had a dream of becoming THE home for original local bands. As most musicians in the area know, it is not easy to find places to play all original music, let alone get paid for it. Granted, the bands that play at The Lounge are not facing a financial windfall, but Rebecca is fair in that she puts the responsibility for making the night profitable squarely on the bands. A bands' pay for the night is based on what is collected at the door, so if the featured band promotes the show well, the evening can turn out to be quite worth it. At the very least, the band can pay their way back and forth from the club.

Serving bottled and draft beer, assorted wine coolers and other pre-mixed drinks and soda, the bar caters to the audience that it draws. You will find even on your first visit that Rebecca treats everyone who enters her doors as family. Bands come from near, (the first band to ever play the Seabreeze was Severed Existence from Daytona Beach,) and far, ( Avarice from Los Angeles, California,) to play this venue and leave their mark, literally. The walls of The Lounge are decorated with drawings, slogans and even some profanity, courtesy of the bands that have performed there.

The club started out as an extremely intimate venue with a long bar stretching all the way to the stage by the front door. Rebecca was so concerned with "her bands'" comfort, though, that she has systematically shortened the bar, in order to give the bands a larger stage area. This love and respect is reciprocated from patrons and musical acts alike. In fact, the bands have so much respect for Rebecca and her venue that after a recent theft of bar money from her purse, Lounge alumni bands got together and performed an all day benefit. They then donated their own pay and all proceeds from merchandise to Rebecca, so that she could keep up with her monthly bills.

If you ask around town – "Where is the best venue to play local original music?" - the response from any band that has played the Seabreeze would be to pass Rebecca's phone number on. Directly across the street from The Lounge, is another hot spot called the Seabreeze Coffee Connection . For years, the Lounge and the Coffee House have complemented each other in showcasing local talent. The Lounge is more for the older musician—though, The Lounge does occasionally hold all-ages shows—and the Coffee House for the mid-to-late teen band that is still trying to break through.

If you're looking for a great night out where you can make good friends and listen to great music, head on down to one of these hotspots on Seabreeze Blvd in Daytona. You'll never want to leave, and you'll always come back for more.
