Movies that we generally define as thrillers are fun to go see because they initiate audience interaction.  In films like The Sixth Sense and Fight Club, you spend the entire film trying to figure out what’s really going on and by the time the end credits roll, you are still shocked by how far off your guesses were.  In some other films, though—like Mulholland Drive and, now, Stay—the end credits start to roll and you’re still sitting in the theater clueless.  Movies are meant to entertain audiences, not leave them wondering exactly what happened in the last two hours of their lives.  I’m sure it would be easy to go online and find an explanation of the film, but doesn’t that totally defeat the purpose?

Stay does have its strong qualities. As the tagline suggests, this film takes place in the time that people spend between the worlds of the living and the dead.  The film was made with incredible acting and fantastic cinematography.  Even the story idea isn’t bad - it just wasn’t written well.  Ewan McGregor (Star Wars) plays Sam Foster, a psychiatrist trying to prevent college art student Henry Letham (Ryan Gosling, The Notebook) from committing suicide.  Naomi Watts (The Ring) plays Sam’s artistic girlfriend who once attempted suicide.  Unfortunately, that’s all I can say without spoiling the film for those of you who may still have the desire to go see it.

If you go and see Stay and have any questions, feel free to e-mail them to me.  I understand more of the film; I just can’t disclose that information without ruining it for others.  Final Thought:  Did the producers have to explain the film to the cast before they signed on?  Do they understand the film they made?
