Do you ever see a preview for a movie and get really excited about it only to be disappointed by the final product? Trailers aren’t supposed to be better than the full-length film; however, that’s the case with Curtis Hanson’s latest film, In Her Shoes (based on the book by Jennifer Weiner). How and why the director of 8 Mile and Wonder Boys signed up to do a chick flick is a question waiting to be answered. The movie did contain all the sisterly-love mushy stuff the preview showed, but most of the funny parts of the film were in the previews, leaving very few funny surprises in the film.
Sisters Maggie and Rose Feller couldn’t be more different. In fact, their only common traits may be their DNA (which I would definitely test) and their shoe size. Maggie (Cameron Diaz) is an almost thirty jobless party girl going nowhere fast. Rose (Toni Collette) has a law degree from Princeton and a job at a top-notch law firm. Maggie is fun and beautiful and has perfected her talent of having guys buy her drinks. Rose is a slightly overweight workaholic who buys her own drinks. Shirley MacLaine plays the delightful Grandma the girls never knew they had.
Even though the material wasn’t quite good enough for the cast, Diaz, Collette, and MacLaine still gave great performances. There was absolutely nothing likeable about Maggie Feller, but Diaz somehow doesn’t let you hate her. As the title might suggest, In Her Shoes has an abundance of fantastic heels, but even the shoes couldn’t keep my eye from wandering over to the hottie sitting next to me (and usually I get so into movies that I probably wouldn’t notice if things were to explode around me).
Final Thought: If you want to see great shoes, go to the mall – at least you can try them on there. If you want to see some great butt shots of Cameron Diaz, wait until the movie goes to video.
