She's The Man
Hot Teen Comedy
2006-03-23
Article Written by: Sami Jo

“Everybody has a secret... Duke wants Olivia who likes Sebastian who is really Viola whose brother is dating Monique so she hates Olivia who's with Duke to make Sebastian jealous who is really Viola who's crushing on Duke who thinks she's a guy...”

Viola’s (Amanda Bynes) soccer team gets cut from the school’s athletic program.  When her soccer coach won’t let girls try out for the boy’s team and her boyfriend sides with the coach, she decides to pretend to be her brother and makes the team of her rival high school.  Posing as her brother, she falls for her roommate and teammate, Duke (Channing Tatum).  Explaining the film is much harder than following it!

The filmmakers flawlessly transferred Shakespeare’s play “The Twelfth Knight” to film, with an awesome script that was perfectly cast and directed by Andy Fickman.  Please don’t misunderstand – it’s by no means an Oscar film, but rather a fun teen comedy perfectly executed.  Like 10 Things I Hate About You (based on Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew”), the film uses a catchy title and incorporates a young, hip soundtrack.  Additionally, modern teen dramas are integrated with a comedic approach, making the audience laugh throughout the entire film.

Amanda Bynes (What a Girl Wants) once again captures her audience and leaves them wanting more.  Co-stars Channing Tatum, Laura Ramsey, Robert Hoffman, James Kirk, Alex Breckenridge, Brandon Jay McLaren and Jonathan Sadowski all compliment the film.  Bynes and Tatum have an interesting chemistry as they connected both when Viola was pretending to be Sebastian and when she was being herself.

In the end, She’s the Man may be the best teen flick since Clueless.
