Sami Jo’s Pick for the Oscars
The 2006 Oscars

Article Written by: Sami Jo

Comedian Jon Stewart is set to host the 78th Academy Awards at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, California.  The Oscars will take place Sunday, March 5 at 8 pm on ABC.  This year’s presenters include many Hollywood elite, such as Sandra Bullock, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Aniston, Clint Eastwood, Jamie Foxx, Will Ferrell, Tom Hanks, Morgan Freeman, Nicole Kidman, Will Smith and many more.  The Oscars are by far the most prestigious and glamorous of all the motion picture awards ceremonies.

The Oscar Statuette depicts a knight holding a crusader's sword, standing on a reel of film with five spokes, signifying the original branches of the Academy: Actors, Writers, Directors, Producers and Technicians. Why do they call this 8.5 pound, 13.5 inch trophy Oscar?  Apparently, back in the beginning days of the award, the executive director of the Academy library felt that the trophy resembled her Uncle Oscar.  Little did Uncle Oscar know that his name would resemble a goal set by actors for decades to come.

The 2006 Academy Awards feature an abundance of remarkable work completed by a vast array of incredible talent.  Below are my picks for winners in some of the more popular categories.  For a complete list of nominees, please visit www.oscar.com for more information and don’t forget to tune in this Sunday to find out who will make their way into cinema history.
