Mr. and Mrs. Smith
The couple is not as common as their name
2005-07-02
Article Written by: Sami Jo

Jane (Angelina Jolie) and John (Brad Pitt) Smith have been married for five…or six years, and neither knows the other is a secret assassin. They seek counseling for their marital problems, which stem from the fact that they continuously lie to each other to protect their identity. However, when they are each given the assignment to kill the other, they begin to learn all the things about each other that most couples learn before marriage.

The film is both action-packed and filled with comedy. Superbly written by Simon Kinberg, the film is filled with witty sexual innuendo sure to keep you laughing throughout. Even the costume designer brings humor to the film by having Pitt & Jolie's common target, Benjamin Diaz, wear a Fight Club (another Pitt film) t-shirt during questioning. Male vs. female fight scenes are not yet common in cinema, but director Doug Limon puts the action on the screen in such a way that people won't stop to realize that Pitt is hitting a girl. Like most action films though, the secondary relationships leave something to be desired.

The cast is rounded out by Vince Vaughn (Old School), who never misses his punch lines and Adam Brody (TV's The OC). While I fully believe that Brody will be at the top of Hollywood's A-List one day, he doesn't quite step out of his Seth Cohen character for this one. If for no other reason, go see this film for the eye candy.
