Underworld: Evolution
A Hybrid Love Story
2006-02-10
Article Written by: Heather McVay

With such discouraging reviews surrounding Underworld: Evolution, it's remarkable that it was able to do as well as it did at the box office. However, the movie manages to deliver what it's selling: a love story with fangs, guns, and skintight pleather.

Writer/Director Len Wiseman once again takes us into the world of Vampires and Lycan's for another dose of bitter feuding, special effects and clothing you can bounce a quarter off. Underworld: Evolution seamlessly begins where the last film left off, with only a short glimpse into the past film. Selene (Kate Beckinsale) and Michael (Scott Speedman) are on the run from a newly awoken vampire lord named Marcus (Tony Curran) who seeks the means to release his twin brother from his eternal prison. Emboldened by his new hybrid powers, Marcus seeks to control his Lycan twin and build a new coven upon it. Selene must stop Marcus before he unleashes a power that even he might not be able to control.

Don't expect the Lycans to look the same in this film as they did in the first. The story line will take you back to the original Lycan and his form, which closely resembles something like the original Howling. But don't fret; the ones from the first film will make a brief appearance. Underworld: Evolution wouldn't be the same though without some high flying wire fun; Kate Beckinsale does more of her wire jumping stunts that captivated us for a few seconds in the original.  This sequel is far from lacking on our favorite Vampire and Lycan love story though. What began in the first film as forbidden lust blooms into everlasting love between our two main characters. It’s not as moving as major blockbusters, but enough to make you feel something in your gut other than popcorn and chocolate!

My Opinion: If you are a fan of the first Underworld than this is a must see for you. If you thought that the first one wasn't worth the film it was put on, then perhaps this is something to wait for until it's released on DVD and marked at half off.
