The Hollywood Foreign Press Association was formed in the early 1940’s by Los-Angeles based journalists working for overseas publications with the intent to cleverly and accurately report entertainment news. The HFPA is most popularly known for their Annual Golden Globe Awards and multi-million dollar charity donations. The 63rd Annual Golden Globe Awards will be held Sunday, January 16 at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be broadcast on NBC from 8-11 pm.
Over the years, the Golden Globe Awards have become a precedent to the Oscars – many Golden Globe nominees and winners go on to become Oscar nominees and winners for the same performance. However, unlike the Oscars, the Globes cover cinema and television, not just motion picture. It’s the only award show to draw high profile celebrities from both the big screen and small screen and bring them under the same roof. Speaking of high profile celebrities, this year’s presenters include Leonardo DiCaprio, Harrison Ford, Jamie Foxx, Natalie Portman, Emma Thompson, Jessica Alba, Emmy Rossum, John Travolta, and Denzel Washington.
Unique to the Golden Globe Awards are Miss Golden Globe and the Cecil B. DeMille Award. Each year a different girl serves as an usher to escort winners off of the stage. Miss Golden Globe is always the daughter of an actor, director, or other industry celebrity. This year’s Miss Golden Globe is Dakota Johnson, daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson. For the first time, a Miss Golden Globe is the daughter of a former Miss Golden Globe. Additionally, Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson have each won Golden Globes for Working Girl and “Miami Vice,” respectively.
The Cecil B. DeMille Award is a prestigious award given to outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment. Cecil B. DeMille himself worked on over 80 films spanning 44 years. An all-around industry man, he was an actor, director, producer, editor, writer, crewman, and also developed stars. Anthony Hopkins will be the recipient of this year’s Cecil B. DeMille Award. Hopkins has received six Golden Globe nominations, four Academy Award nominations and won one Oscar. He has appeared in over 100 films during the last 39 years.
