A beautiful canopy of trees encloses the Port Orange Regional Library, and, as you approach the facility, you cannot help but feel empowered by the wealth of knowledge that lies inside. Upon entering, the smiling faces of the friendly and knowledgeable staff greet you and fill you with a soothing comfortable feeling. As an experienced library visitor, I can tell those of you who do not frequent our local library system that you don’t know what you’re missing. In addition to the books, books, and more books available for check out, they also have an abundance of fun and exciting events on a daily basis. They have happenings for all ages!
Regional Librarian, Jane Weimer helped me gather information, and I have to tell you what a lovely and energetic woman she is. It is refreshing to meet someone who is so enthusiastic about her job. She wants to spread the word about all the exciting things that the Port Orange Regional Library has to offer.
The Port Orange Regional Library literally always has something going on. There is a book club that meets the third Wednesday of each month—this month’s book is “When Elephants Dance.” The library also hosts a special program geared toward weight management called “Weight Watchers at Work,” and that group meets every Monday with first-timers always welcome to come in and join a fun and supportive group. There is a health program called “First Wednesday’s Health Series,” which is sponsored by the Port Orange Regional Library and the Halifax Medical Center Foundation—the most recent series entitled “Diabetes.” All of these presentations take place the first Wednesday of each month through March. In addition to those programs, the library also holds a book sale every other month, with sales occurring in October, December, February, April, June, and August.
The Port Orange Regional Library has not left out the little ones either. There are many wonderful events for tiny tots, toddlers, and preschoolers as well. “Toddler Time” for ages 2-3 years of age takes place at 10:00 am on Tuesdays. “Preschool Story Time” for ages 3-5 years is on Wednesdays at 10:00 am, and Thursdays are fun-filled with “Mother Goose Time” for ages 3 months-18 months at 9:54 am and “Tiny Tots Time” for ages 18-24 months at 10:30 am.
For the older children there groups and clubs that meet every month including a chess club that meets Tuesdays from 5:30-6:30 and Fridays 3:30-4:30. There is an after school program available as well, but for something a little less cerebral the library will be showing the movie “Hocus Pocus” on October 27th at 3:30. On October 27th at 5:00 the library will present a Social Studies Fair Orientation, a program designed to help both parents and students understand the projects required by the local public schools. It will also provide support from preparation to the completion of the project.
Finally, there is a Halloween Party celebration on October 26th! The library will host a Halloween parade of costumes and everyone is welcome to come and join in the fun. They only ask that you bring snacks for everyone to share and enjoy.
As you can tell this special place offers too many programs for me to mention them all. Some of the other programs or classes of interest are the Caregivers Support Group, classes on CPR, Internet classes, Knitting, Embroidery, Philosophy, and even model shipbuilding. With so many different programs to offer, the library is bound to have something just for you. Inside the library you can pick up flyers listing all the monthly happenings, or you can get that information and more by visiting Volusia library website. For resources, visit the online catalog. If the library doesn’t have exactly what you are looking for, they are always open to suggestions from the community. Let them know what you want; I am certain that your suggestion will be well received.
With so much to offer, the Port Orange Regional Library is a hidden treasure right in our own backyard. Stop by 1005 City Center Circle in Port Orange, and find out for yourself what a wonderful place it is.
