Howard Hughes: The Untold Story
By Peter Harry Brown and Pat H. Broeske
2005-09-07
Article Written by: Sami Jo

The film "The Aviator" left me with a burning desire to learn more about Howard Hughes and his amazing life. I learned that Leonardo DiCaprio had wanted to make a film on Hughes' life for years and that the book Howard Hughes: The Untold Story by Peter Harry Brown and Pat H. Broeske was his inspiration. For the book to have such an impact on an actor to inspire a great ambition, I figured it was worth a read.

Peter Harry Brown and Pat H. Broeske tell the incredible story of a man who conquered opposite industries of both film and aviation. The authors also cover each of Hughes' romantic relationships from beginning to end, including his romances with Katharine Hepburn, Ava Gardner, and Jean Harlow, among others and examined his quirky mannerisms.

In gathering information for the book, Peter Harry Brown and Pat H. Broeske went through 400,000 pages of court documents, 2,000 pages of FBI reports, and conducted more than 600 interviews. While all this information paints a complete picture of Hughes' life, it does get confusing trying to keep all the names straight. To help the reader out, the authors added an index, filmography, bibliography, and source notes. The time and effort Peter Harry Brown and Pat H. Broeske put into their work pays off. By the end of the book, the reader feels as if they have actually met Howard Hughes and seen his amazing genius first hand.
