The 2006 Daytona 500 is less than two weeks away. Many race fans know that the Daytona 500 is the biggest, most prestigious race of the year, but few people know why. In Duane Falk’s The Daytona 500: The Great American Race, the reason behind the local tracks’ fame is bestowed upon us.
Written in a historical manner, Falk provides us with the background of the race from the days the race was held on the world’s most famous beach, the formation of NASCAR, and all the way through to institution of restrictor plates and beyond. Fans of the Earnhardt family will especially enjoy the entire section of the book devoted on the impact Dale Sr. had on the greatest of all races.
In addition to the intriguing text, the book features endless pictures that also cover the history of racing in Daytona Beach. From black and white pictures from the beach-racing days to color photographs of more modern pictures, one can find fascination in many places, including the changes in the cars over the years and the involvement of high-profile sponsors.
Devoted NASCAR fans and fans of the big race in Daytona may find the book somewhat elementary in text, but are sure to enjoy the pictures. Newer NASCAR fans and those who have relocated to the Daytona Beach area will find the book to be extremely resourceful.
