If you are ready to take a walk down memory lane and get a tasty meal in the process, then The Brooklyn Ice Caffé is the place for you. Located in a brand new shopping center at 4649 Clyde Morris Boulevard, this establishment is only accessible from Herbert Street. Staying true to the old-time luncheonette, one will not find a full course meal on the menu. The luncheonette was a place for folks to stop in for a cup of coffee, a sandwich and maybe even dessert before or after work. Luncheonettes were located on almost every corner of every neighborhood in Brooklyn, and each neighborhood had their favorite. One could actually tell what neighborhood another was from by which luncheonette he or she frequented. Children also favored luncheonettes because they could stock up on penny candy, comic books and Italian ices on hot New York summer days.
The Brooklyn Ice Caffé offers a variety of bagels, Panini sandwiches, hot dogs, crepes and salads for those with a grumble in the belly. The drink menu is much more extensive, offering more than just a variety of coffees, juices, tea and soda. They have an old-fashioned egg cream, a Lime Ricky (which, by the way, is cherry soda with lime – I had to call my Brooklyn-born mother for that piece of trivia) and several flavors of Italian sodas. They also offer specialty drinks, served hot or cold, like the Carmela, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Marine Park Mint. The most popular drink is the espresso, and each flavor has a different take on integrating chocolate and caramel, hazelnut or mint.
The best part about this establishment is the dessert. Until the Brooklyn Ice Caffé came to town it was impossible to find an Italian ice in Volusia County. They have several flavors to choose from, but I recommend the vanilla chip or the chocolate hazelnut. One can also choose whether her or she would like a water ice or a cream ice. If, by chance, you don’t find yourself in the mood for an Italian ice, be sure to try the homemade cheesecake. They even offer a low-carb/ sugar free version (I bet they didn’t have that in the 1950’s in Brooklyn)! Other dessert items include hand-filled cannolis, éclairs and cream puffs.
While the Brooklyn Ice Caffé stays true to its roots with the menu selection, they have updated the interior design of the establishment. This modern luncheonette has more than just stools and bar space for customers to eat at. Several tables and booths are available for additional space and comfort. They don’t provide comics to read, but they do have plenty of newspapers and magazines to choose from. The establishment is also a Wi-Fi hot spot. Feel free to take your laptop with you to get some work done while you enjoy the many goodies the caffé has to offer.
What sets The Brooklyn Ice Caffé apart from other local cafés? Aside from the Italian ices, patrons are greeted with a warm welcome and the owner visited each table at least twice. This caffé brings nostalgia and great tasting food and beverages to our neighborhood.
