Biscuits & Gravy
And So Much More
2005-12-08
Article Written by: Jillian Smith

Judging from the name alone—Biscuits & Gravy—you can probably guess what this restaurant's specialty is. On the morning that the WHD crew stepped into this down-home diner when we should have been working, we found that almost every seated customer already had a hearty plateful of B&G's fantastic biscuits and gravy on the table in front of them. It was a sign. We had to try them for ourselves. All of us.

In fact, the "Daily Breakfast Special" is a half order of biscuits and gravy—which I still have a hard time finishing—two eggs cooked to order any way you please and your choice of bacon or sausage, all for only $4.99. Even if you're a late sleeper (and who isn't at heart) breakfast is served from 5:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. seven days a week. We all had a serving of our own, each plate specially made to suit each of our picky whims. It was excellent!

I know that anyone can say that food is excellent, but I am a biscuits and gravy aficionado, folks. I was born and raised in West Virginia , and that meant momma's homemade breakfast every Sunday morning. Rain or shine, in sickness and in health, we had this meal every week. When I moved to Daytona Beach , this tradition was sorely missed. Now, though, this restaurant has given me a new place to sit down and get a little taste of home.

Of course, you don't have to get the daily special. In addition to their side orders of Home Fries, Grits and Corned Beef Hash, B&G also serves French Toast, Bagels, English Muffins, Hot Cinnamon Buns, Danish and flavored and regular Pancakes and Waffles. B&G rounds out their breakfast menu with a variety of omelets made to order with three Grade A Large Eggs. The choices vary from a Vegetarian Omelet to a Meatlover's Omelet with everything in between—the most expensive of which is only $5.29.

If you are not a late sleeper and your life does consist of that weird meal called lunch that I keep hearing so much about, B&G still has you covered. With Sandwiches, Subs and Burgers to suit ever taste and budget—you can even choose to have it oven heated or served cold. They have PB&J and Grilled Cheese for those with simpler tastes, but they also have Patty Melts, Club and Reuben Sandwiches. The "Daily Lunch Special" consists of either a Fish, Scallops, Shrimp or Clam Strips Basket served with fries and cole slaw for only $5.29.

If you are an even later sleeper than most, and you miss your shot at an amazing breakfast, B&G also serves dinner from 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. They have Appetizers, Salad Platter, Italian Pasta, Steak and Seafood Dinners, Gyros and, of course, House Specials. All Dinners are served with Mashed Potatoes, Vegetables and Rolls, but you can add soup or salad for only $1.00 extra.

I would like to issue one small warning for the WHD readers before the end of this article. If you choose your restaurants based on things like ambience, décor and other non-food factors, B&G might not be the place for you. It is a simple restaurant with minimal decorations. Time and money not spent on that, though, clearly go into the heartfelt service and fantastic food that the restaurant offers daily.

Like all decisions, this should be one that you make for yourself. You can visit the restaurant at Nova and Madeline. Be sure to check out all their daily specials before making your choice. Enjoy!
