DBCC Presents Civic Orchestra Concert

(Daytona Beach, Fla., 10/16/06) - The DBCC Civic Orchestra under the direction of Norton Christeson will perform popular classics of the Romantic Era, Sunday, Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the DBCC Theater Center (Bldg. 220) located at 1200 West International Speedway Blvd.

Pieces include the rousing Dvorak Slavonic Dance #1; the dreamlike Pavanne by Maurice Ravel; an overture entitled "Tambourin" by J.C. Bach; the "Carmen Suite" of Georges Bizet, and the Meditation from "Thais" by Jules Massenet, featuring the concert mistress of the DBCC Civic Orchestra, Kendra Cochenour, as violin soloist.

The era of Romantic music is defined as the period of European classical music that runs roughly from the early 1800s to the first decade of the 20th century. It was a period of great change and emancipation. While the Classical era had strict laws of balance and restraint, the Romantic era moved away from that by allowing artistic freedom, experimentation, and creativity. The music of this time period was very expressive, and melody became the dominant feature. Composers even used this expressive means to display nationalism.

The performance is open to the public and tickets may be purchased for $5 Wednesday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and on Thursdays from 3:30 to 6 p.m. at the DBCC Box Office in the lobby of the Theater Center (220). Everyone with a valid DBCC I. D. card may pick up one free ticket at the Box Office. For additional information, call (386) 506-3042.

The performing arts programs at Daytona Beach Community College prepare students for a future in music, drama and dance while also providing entertainment opportunities for the community through a variety of events produced each semester. Proceeds from tickets are used to support the Performing Arts Scholarship program at DBCC.
