BARKTOBERFESTPaws to Consider

The Halifax Humane Society has been helping homeless and wild animals in Volusia County for nearly seventy years. Though the number of animals entering the shelter increases substantially every year, they remain dedicated to improving conditions for the animals in our area by placing as many as possible into good, permanent homes. That's no easy task when you consider that over 16,000 animals per year are brought into the facility! Handling and caring for homeless animals is incredibly expensive, especially since the HHS does not receive financial gifts from the United Way or tax dollars. Without community assistance, HHS would be unable to aide the county's homeless animals.
The perfect opportunity to show your support will be taking place on Saturday, October 8th, from 10:00am - 2:00pm. The Halifax Humane Society, along with generous sponsors like Pet Paradise Resort and Schering-Plough, will be holding "BARKTOBERFEST" at the HHS facility located at 2364 W. LPGA Blvd. This event cost $5 for adults, but children and four-legged friends get in free. You and your entire family can come out and enjoy games, music, food and more - all while helping a great cause. "BARKTOBERFEST" will be featuring activities such as face painting for the little ones and pet photos for the furry ones. Doggie celebrities like the Purina Frisbee Dogs and the Volusia County Sheriff K-9 Unit will be on hand-or paw-for demonstrations. Also, Schering-Plough will be offering micro-chipping for your pooch for only $20! If you're the type who likes to get something back for your efforts, all you have to do is bring a donation of pet food and you will be automatically entered into a drawing for prizes so amazing and top secret that we couldn't get security to divulge the inventory.
Alhough this is the event's first year, the staff is excited and believes that it will help raise awareness in the community. "We can host about 350 animals at a time, and, unfortunately, we are almost always full. This will give people a chance to come to the facility and see how clean it is and experience first-hand how friendly the staff is. We want them to come and see for themselves, then they'll know where to come when they're ready to adopt," said Michelle Perry, HHS Volunteer & Event Coordinator. When you are ready, you're sure to appreciate all the ways in which the HHS sets themselves apart from other facilities. With a "get-acquainted area" where you can hold and play with your potential pet, and an area to let your current pet meet and greet with the possible addition to the family, you're sure to find an animal that is just right for you. Join the Halifax Humane Society in building a community admired for its treatment of all of its creatures. Together we can teach that compassion doesn't stop at two legs!
