DBCC SGA stirs Thanksgiving cheer

Assisting with Central Florida's Thanksgiving Brigade goal of feeding 1,000 families this year, the Student Government Association at Daytona Beach Community College is reaching out to the College community to help bring Thanksgiving cheer to local families.

"With turkey decorated drop boxes around the Daytona Beach Campus, DBCC staff and students have the opportunity to make this years Thanksgiving holiday a bit more enjoyable," commented Karen Splain, SGA spokesperson.

According to event organizers Christie Whitehead and Tom Dowling, the aim is to collect enough perishable and non-perishable items that can then be put together to make Thanksgiving dinners for several families of five. "We can only do this with the generous support from our immediate community," stated Whitehead.

"People can help this effort in many ways," explained Dowling. "By purchasing all the items that make up a complete dinner or just by adding an extra can or two to their weekly groceries - every little bit helps."

Shopping suggestions for non-perishable items include: laundry basket, roasting/baking pan, beans, juices, box mashed potatoes, cranberries, box stuffing, turkey gift certificates, canned corn, canned peas, canned yams, and canned mixed vegetables. Baskets will be delivered to needy families in Volusia and Flagler counties on Saturday, Nov. 18. If donating perishable items such as fresh fruits/vegetables, pies, bread, or cookies, these should be purchased no earlier than Thursday, Nov. 16 and delivered no later than Friday, Nov. 17.

Look out for the turkey decorated drop-boxes or make your donation to the SGA office in Bldg. 130, Room 151 on the DBCC Daytona Beach Campus located at 1200 W. Int’l Speedway Blvd. If you don’t have the time to go grocery shopping, cash or check donations are a great alternative and can be made at the Student Activities Department in Bldg. 130, Room 113.
