Volusia-Flagler Higher Education Consortium Leaders Make Plans
(Daytona Beach, Fla., 06/21/06) - Presidents and officials from area colleges that make up the Volusia-Flagler Higher Education Consortium met on June 19 with Volusia County Emergency Management officials for disaster related tabletop exercises.
The exercises were planned to identify the impact of natural disasters on the physical structures of their campuses; safety of the student body during times of chaos, including protesting, demonstrations and unauthorized speakers; and the financial stability and impact on the institution in cases of mass withdrawals caused by these or health related disasters.
As the scenarios played out, thresholds that would trigger activation of their existing emergency operation plans were identified. Each college identified situations that were unique to their institution, such as the evacuation of residential, athletic, and international students, and discussed options and opportunities for possible joint resolution.
To maintain good communications during disasters, it was recommended that a Consortium representative be present at the Emergency Operations Center to ensure the timely dissemination of information to the Consortium presidents and their disaster teams.
The members of the consortium also discussed opportunities for continued preparation by having representatives from each institution meet to enhance existing plans, conduct joint training sessions and develop an even stronger partnership with Volusia County Emergency Management.
For additional information on this training session please contact Jim Ryan or Rick Moore at (386) 254-1500.
The Volusia-Flagler Higher Education Consortium was formed to promote cooperation among member colleges and universities (Bethune-Cookman College, Daytona Beach Community College, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Stetson University, and University of Central Florida) on academic and operational issues. From the beginning it has been dedicated to enhancing Volusia County’s business and industrial activity. The consortium is closely tied to economic development efforts that serve the needs of local companies that are expanding or companies that are new to the area. It champions research and technology. The Higher Education Consortium is committed to building a future that underscores Volusia/Flagler counties’ leadership position as a center of technology with an enviable quality of life.
