A Night in Athens
The Chance To Be Greek For A Day
2005-11-10
Article Written by: Sheri Bowling

From 11:00 a.m.–10:00 p.m. on November 10 th through the 13 th Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church will be celebrating their 29 th Annual Greek Festival in Daytona Beach . WHD recently got the chance to sit down and chat with Chris and Lynn Paspalakis, two of the hosts for this event, and their excitement about the experience seems to be both justified and contagious.

"A Night in Athens" is certainly going to be an event for the whole family to enjoy. There will be food, dancing, games, music and fun for all ages, and admission is free from 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. daily. After 3:00 p.m. there will be a $2.00 donation, and during the festival, further charitable donations for Hurricane Katrina relief and The Boys and Girls Clubs of Volusia County will be graciously accepted.

Authentic Greek Food will be the official fare, and at this year's event, there will be three different venues to choose from—The Greek Cuisine, The Gyro Taverna and The Santorini Taverna. The lattermost of that list is a full-service sit-down restaurant located on the Halifax River, and their location offers breathtaking views of the river and of the entire festival itself. To promote the community's involvement, all of the wonderful food at this year's festival will be homemade by the community parishioners who have been working diligently to transform their heirloom recipes into dishes everyone can enjoy. Simply put, the menu is absolutely mouthwatering! To name just a small sampling of the outright feast that will be available, there will be Greek salads, gyros, roasted lamb, Pastitsio and Baklava. For a more detailed menu, visit the church's website at www.saintdemetriosdaytona.org .

In addition to the excellent cuisine, you'll be singing and dancing as you enjoy the fabulous live band and Greek folk dancing done by the children of the church. Also at this festival you'll find lots of fun, games and souvenirs to help you remember your eventful day. You'll find Yia Yia's Greek Kitchen Food Store, artifacts, religious icons and ethnic jewelry all for sale at the gift shop, and there will be a raffle with a $10,000 cash prize!

This event will be a great chance to come out and enjoy Greek food, fun, music and more. The church is located at 129 North Halifax Avenue in Daytona Beach , and there will be free parking across the street. There will also be a free shuttle service to and from the Municipal Parking Garage, but premium front door parking will also be available. If you have any further questions about the 29 th Annual Greek Festival, you can call (386) 252-6012 for more information.
