IS -"Raw Blues In The Land Of Mexico"
To Sojourn Through Expressive Creation
2005-09-14
Article Written by: Benjamin Cameron

A phenomenal band from Volusia County introduced themselves about three years ago, and soon thereafter, they entered your home with their first EP entitled "Raw Blues In The Land Of Mexico". "IS" combines technical musicianship with an infallible sense of feel; a combination that has been derived from their rich and diverse musical backgrounds.

Music takes us on a journey. "Raw Blues In The Land Of Mexico" is comprised of six songs that seem to have been strategically arranged to enhance that experience. Track one, "Neo 6", begins with nothing more than a symbolic kick drum, much like the footsteps at the beginning of a grand and heroic journey of self discovery.

As various thoughts enter your mind, so emerges the first voice of an almost inquiring guitar, which seems to be double-checking your list of preparations for the journey on which you have now embarked. After two repetitions of the four bar phrase, the entrance of the second guitar answers with a very colorful voice-reassuring the subconscious that we must not fall victim to our doubts and worries. As the intro continues to intensify, the drumming of Billy Dean smoothly transitions the piece into a coalescence of a well-defined first chapter.

The excursion picks up a little with their second track entitled "Hard". Straight forward and headstrong, it is though your journey has been kindled with a new sense of gumption. You then continue on, with "IS" as your guide.

"I Keep On Rockin'", a great final track, is the perfect closing act for this CD. It will leave you with a sense of finality, simultaneously pulling at the chords of your own ambitious desire for more. A most appropriate effect, since "IS" will soon release to the public their next CD. The most recently ripe fruit of their labors, their second CD will be like the next tier of the journey set by this musical odyssey.

"Raw Blues In The Land Of Mexico" boasts a revolutionary approach to music, with plenty of groove to go around, thanks to the many different styles each member has studied; vis a vis latin, jazz, classical, opera, and others. Because of the educated contributions, coupled with pure heart and soul, this CD takes the listener on a journey as each track demonstrates superb musicianship and encompasses a broad spectrum of expressive creation.

Don't miss "IS" at Tir Na Nog Friday, September 30, for their CD release show!
