Over the past year or so there has been a great infusion of bands trying to get back to the 1980’s metal sound. One band, which started producing the sound in 1999, has been holding the standard quite higher than the others. That band is OverlorD.
OverlorD was formed by Dave Colucci (former Drummer) and Mike ‘Toast’ Rose (Guitar and Lead Vocals). The two compiled a long list of original songs and went shopping for band members. Colucci and Rose added Bruce Jones (Bass Guitar) and Lead Guitarist
Dave Girrbach. The OverlorD arsenal was complete. When sked about the bands name, Bassist Bruce Jones says that ‘Operation Overlord’ was a mission carried out by the U.S. Military back in World War II, and it just sounded cool to them. The name has produced the slogan, “Overlord has always been synonymous with kicking ass!”
With the full unit in place, the band tirelessly played around the Orlando area and came to the Daytona Beach area for Bike Week, Speed Weeks, and Biketoberfest events. The band was always a perfect fit for the “Biker Type” due to the old school brand of music they played. OverlorD has always had a genuine respect and love for the music that they grew up listening to, and have never been ashamed of filtering those influences into their music. The band’s motto has always been “If we don’t love it – We don’t play it”. To this day the band still pays tribute to some of their favorite bands by covering their music during a show.
During the band’s seven-year history, they have shared the stage with some pretty heavy hitters. The list includes names like Foghat, Blue Oyster Cult, Static X, Drowning Pool, 40 Below Summer, Rob Rock and so many more. In September of 2004, the band was invited to play what in their minds, was their biggest show to date. OverlorD was put on a bill with the previously mentioned Static X, Drowning Pool and Damageplan for a show at Orlando’s Lee Vista Center. The show was sponsored by Musicom Media and expectations were high for all involved. Unfortunately, this show took place at a time when Central Florida was healing from the affects of several hurricanes that hit the area, so the crowd turnout was drastically affected. Not to be sold short, this turned out to be a great experience for the band, and a great show for the fans in attendance.
These days OverlorD tells me that they are looking at the ‘Big Picture’ in regards to where they perform and where they sell their product. The band has been approached by some pretty big name people in the business in regards to representation, and rumor has it that something is in the works for the not so distant future. The band has added Wayne “Drumzilla” Thomas on drums (replacing Dave Colucci). The change has added a new dynamic to the band’s sound and live performance. Wayne comes to the band from other local projects like “Enuff Sedd” and “Divine In Nature” and brings some serious chops and attitude with him. OverlorD feels that Wayne might be that missing piece to the overall puzzle.
Bruce and Toast have an air about them the just screams ‘Rock Star’. The two told me of their storied history, and their latest CD release. They also informed me that OverlorD wrote, produced and recorded all of their music with their own equipment, on their own terms. Their professionalism is impressive. They have a presence and attitude that is matched by no other band on the scene right now.
Keep your eye on www.overlordsite.com and www.myspace.com/overlord for the latest on the band. We have a feeling that big things are just within their reach. OverlorD will be performing at The Seabreeze Metal Lounge in Daytona Beach, on Saturday, February 18th with guests Enuff Sedd, (Drumzilla will be pulling double duty,) Skinnitback and Koiel. Be sure to check them out before it starts to cost big money…
