Seaside Music Theater Presentation:
“Arms And The Man”
2006-11-01
Article Written by: Benjamin Cameron

The Seaside Music Theater makes its winter Season Debut with George Bernard Shaw’s “Arms And The Man” which will run from October 26th through November 5th at the News-Journal Center.

Upon my arrival at the News-Journal Center, I mused to myself at the sight of the building, inwardly taking into account the treasure that it is to behold this modernized version of an ancient art…theater. The ushers, as always, are well placed and extremely helpful in directing me to my seat. The restrooms are spotless, easy to find, and conveniently located. I was pleased to be entering such a well designed monument to the arts, and proud that it exists right here in Daytona Beach.

“Arms And The Man” is a comedic execution of a story that triumphantly draws the line between sides without portraying either as necessarily good or bad. Each performer’s portrayal of their character was flawless. The story is written with characters that demonstrate different personalities, and is quite well rounded and complete. It was both entertaining and moving getting to know the characters as the story unfolded.

The cast was of a smaller number, which creates a setting that enables us to become that much more familiar with each character. The cast includes Jennifer Avery Semrick as Raina, Doug Landrum as Major Paul Petkoff, Matthew MacDermid as the Russian Soldier, Wayne Maugans as Major Sergius Saranoff, Derrick Peterson as Captain Bluntschli, Chris Elaine Staffel as Louka, Joe Wyatt as Nicola, and a Seaside Music Theater founding member – Julia Davidson Truilo as Catherine Petkoff. The production is directed by Lester Malizia.

This production, like all that I have seen from the Seaside Music Theater, was not a disappointment, and left me anxiously awaiting the next. Check back with us for upcoming productions.
