SMT presents Arms and the Man October 26 - November 5th in the intimate Elaine and Thurman Gillespy, Jr. Theater. This classic is an audience-pleaser, with comedy so light and frothy it served as the basis of a musical (The Chocolate Soldier). That makes it one of only two plays by George Bernard Shaw to become a musical. The other My Fair Lady, which was based on Shaw's Pygmalion.
Another reason to love Arms and the Man? Wonderful and challenging acting roles, taken for us in this production by two longtime SMT favorites, Jennifer Avery Semrick and Derrick Peterson.
Semrick plays Raina who loves Sergius, played by SMT newcomer Wayne Maugans, or at least she thinks she does. He is remarkably handsome, especially in uniform, and she swoons at the very thought of him. When she learns he has led his Bulgarian troops to victory, she can barely contain her desire to belong to this perfect man. But life can change in an instant. In through her window climbs a bedraggled Serbian soldier, played by Peterson, who is as charming as he is hungry. In a grand romantic gesture born of too much novel reading, Raina decides to hide the fugitive. Who will she choose in the morning her triumphant but empty hero or the scruffy charmer hiding upstairs?
Find out at Arms and the Man, called an uproarious and unexpected comedy by The Orlando Sentinel.
