WHAT IS SEUSSICAL?
Seussical the Musical is a musical adventure based on the works of Dr. Seuss. It’s Broadway premiere was on November 30, 2000. The shows boasts a dynamic soft-rock musical score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, the composers of Ragtime.
Seussical incorporates elements from at least 15 of Dr. Seuss’ books, as well as many of his best-loved and most familiar characters. Many of these characters never met one another before; but they meet onstage in this musical. During the course of the evening, some will fall in love, some will have desperate adventures and some will save the world. And they’ll all travel everywhere from the Jungle of Nool to McEligott’s Pool to Palm Beach.
The story’s focus is lovable elephant Horton and his mission to rescue the world of Who-ville, the “Tiniest Planet in the Sky” in a speck of dust. Along the the way though, Horton gets sidetracked by the exotic, colorful Mayzie LaBird, who tricks him into warming (and eventually hatching) her egg while she jets off to fun in the Palm Springs sun.
Our guide to the land of Seuss is, of course, the mischievous feline Cat in the Hat. The sung-through show works in characters from much of Seuss lore, including the hapless Gertrude McFuzz, a bird who not only lacks a beautiful plume of a tail but also harbors an unrequited love for Horton.
This imaginative journey is perfect for audiences of all ages!
