A Little Night Music- Music to My Ears
If you want a sexy, racy show that will keep you on the edge of your seat and comedy that will make you laugh out loud then A Little Night Music is for you. It was a beautiful performance in which all the performers exceeded once again any expectations. This was a musical about temptation, desire, infidelity and ultimately finding love in all the wrong places.
Frederick Egerman, played by Nicholas Wuehrmann, is a middle aged man who is married to the young virgin Anne, played by Chris Staffel. She seems to have no intention of ever consummating their marriage and he, in his desperation, finds solace in the arms of his former lover, Desiree Armfeldt (Julia Truilo). But the infidelity doesn’t stop there. Desiree is having an affair with a very jealous, and also married, Count Carl Magnus Malcolm (James Haase). His wife, the Countess Charlotte Malcolm (Nicole Halmos) wants her husband to be faithful and tries to regain his affections by collaborating with Frederick’s wife, Anne. As if that weren’t enough to keep the audience captivated, there is Frederick’s son Henrick (Michael Marcotte) who is a divinity student that is clearly in love with his stepmother while having a rendezvous with the maid Petra (Michelle Knight). All of the above madness comes to an exciting conclusion when they all spend a weekend at the Armfeldt Estate in the country, some of them uninvited!
What conflict! It truly has all the right ingredients for a spectacular show. And for those of you who haven’t been in the new theatre on Beach St., it’s absolutely gorgeous inside. This was my first performance there and I thought it was just stunning with breathtaking acoustics that seemed to carry the sounds to every corner with perfect balance. What an incredible theatre. Even the seating up in the balcony has a wonderful view of the stage and orchestra. Speaking of the orchestra, they did an outstanding job as well, guided by the News Journals own, Tippen Davidson with finesse and beautiful ease. Even if there weren’t such incredible performances on stage, the music alone was music to my ears.
All of the actors really outdid themselves but I can’t help but to be raving of the phenomenal Julia Truilo. I’ve watched her perform in so many shows over the years and she just has that special something when she’s on stage that draws you in and keeps you waiting in anticipation for what’s to happen next. Petra (Michelle Knight) also had a lovely solo called “The Millers Son” and there’s no denying that Frederick (Nicholas Wuehrman) has an intense, powerful stage presence and vocals that command attention. Really though, I could go on forever about all the actors, it was worth every second and every penny.
If you want to escape for the evening into a world of intrigue, passion, love and comedy, then go get a ticket for “A Little Night Music” and enjoy the show. I guaranty you will have an amazing journey into the music of the night!
