Jesus Christ Superstar
A Triumph For The Seaside Music Theater
2006-06-15
Article Written by: Benjamin Cameron

Centuries ago, a television didn’t exist. So how did the people entertain themselves? It was done through song and story, which were combined to form what we know of today as theatre. Theatre survives today more prominently in larger cities, but in Daytona Beach, there are several organizations that are working to further it’s exposure and keep the art alive. One of those organizations is the Seaside Music Theatre, who brings the award winning, classic musicals of Broadway to our local community.

Their most recent production, which will be performed from June 8, 2006 to June 18, 2006, is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s famous rock opera, "Jesus Christ Superstar". Under the direction of Lester Malizia, the Seaside Music Theater’s art director, the production manages to capture and enamor the audience immediately. With the musical talents of the orchestra pit and through the passionate portrayals of each character, the performers demonstrated more than a well done and moving performance. They showed that they believe in the art of theater.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s "Jesus Christ Superstar" is comprised of tunes that showcase a variety of singing talent. Performers Greg Mills (Jesus), Jaygee Macapugay (Mary Magdalene), Daniel Torres (Judas), and Matthew Twerdy (Pilate) held down lead roles that flawlessly carried conviction and sometimes a touch of surrealism. Ranging from dynamic, stage stealing soliloquies to melodic duets, to full on choral style compositions, the challenges of this production were well met and conquered by the cast and crew of the Seaside Music Theater.

Keep your eyes open for each new release. You can visit their web site at www.SeasideMusicTheater.org or just check the event calendar right here on WhatsHappeningDaytona.com. Don’t miss their presentation of "Jesus Christ Superstar", and don’t miss any of their future productions either. The new home of the Seaside Music Theater, the News Journal Center, is a phenomenal addition to the area, and brings a better venue for such performances.
