TWO GROUNDBREAKING SHOWS OPEN SMT SUMMER SEASON!
Daytona Beach, June 7, 2006 - Seaside Music Theater’s (SMT) first two shows of its 30th Anniversary Summer Season bring one word to mind – GROUNDBREAKING!! There are groundbreaking characters who took risks to make big changes, groundbreaking stories that inspired cultural phenomenon, and SMT’s groundbreaking new home, The News-Journal Center, where all this wonderful creativity and passion will come alive.
First, get ready to rock with the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical depicting the greatest drama of all time, Jesus Christ Superstar, playing June 8 - 18! From ballads that became radio mega-hits like I Don’t Know How to Love Him to funky, high-energy crowd pleasers like Jesus Christ Superstar, this show contains the best classic rock music to ever hit the stage. Superstar has a power-packed cast including SMT favorites Greg Mills (Jesus), Daniel Torres (Judas), Jaygee Macapugay (Mary Magdalene), and Matthew Twerdy (Pilate).
When Superstar exploded onto the stage in the 1970’s, it was clear the musical world would never be the same. The musical gives new dimension to the biblical story of Jesus’ last seven days of life by telling it through the perspective of Judas.
“We are looking at the story in a new way,“ says Superstar director and SMT Artistic Director Malizia, “so that each audience member can view a well-known story with fresh eyes.”
Recently, FPTA (Florida Professional Theater Association), awarded Malizia the Richard G. Fallon award for Excellence in Professional Theatre for his tenacity, vision, passion and leadership, all of which he is sure to infuse into this awe-inspiring production.
Jesus Christ Superstar will be performed on the Josephine Field Davidson Stage within the News-Journal Center. SMT gratefully acknowledges Superstar sponsors: Felix & Ursula Amon, Amon Investments, Bahama House/Best Western Aku Tiki Inn, Florida Power & Light, Reid Hughes, Reid B. Hughes, Jr. (Buddy), International Eye Associates, P.A., Professional Title Agency, Mark & Patrizia Rubin, The Staed & Lansberry Families, Sun Trust Thomas J. Yuschok, M.D. – Radiology Associates Imaging Centers.
Next, SMT presents a new musical about three sisters who helped “swing” the door open for women in the music industry in Sisters of Swing: The Story of the Andrews Sisters, playing June 15 – July 16. Sisters of Swing, directed and choreographed by Chuck Hoenes, tells more than a story about three sisters from Minneapolis who made it big. It tells a story about the American dream.
It’s wartime, and the Andrews Sisters are making their mark! From the cradle to the grave, follow the funny and heartfelt story of three women who helped define an era. There’s Laverne (Jill Slyter), the “little mother,” Maxene (Jennifer Johns), the big mouth who always steps a little outside of the lines, and Patty (Jennifer Swiderski), lead singer and the youngest of the trio, who simply adores the spotlight…all of the time.
Experience their loves, losses, and laughs through all the popular music that made them famous, including such hits as, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Bei Meir Bist Du Schon (Means That You’re Grand), and Ac-Cen-Tchu-Ate the Positive.
Look for a long list of cameos – all played by SMT’s very versatile, very funny, very talented, very popular, Gary Cadwallader – including (but not limited to) Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Carmen Miranda, Johnny Carson, and Ed McMahon! But Cadwallader is not the only versatile member of this cast. Music Director Kevin Wallace also plays Vic Schoen, the Sisters’ arranger and Patty’s love interest.
Sisters of Swing will be performed on the Elaine & Thurman Gillespy, Jr. Stage within the News-Journal Center. SMT gratefully acknowledges Sisters of Swing sponsors: Benedict Advertising, Bright House Networks, Bruce Slipock, John & Kandy Vagovic, Zeno Office Solutions, Inc.
