DeLAND, FL- The magical musical "Pippin" will be opening at the Sands Theater Center on Friday, May 5, 2006 at 8 PM. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for students and children. Additional performances will be May 6, 12, 13, 18, 19, & 20 at 8 PM, and May 7, 14, & 21 at 2:30 PM. Reservations can be made by calling 386-736-7456, T-F from 12-4. Parental guidance is suggested for children under 13 as there is some suggestive dance and mild language. The theater is located at 600 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand, FL 32720.
This production of "Pippin" features Cameron Lane in the title role, and Kylie Koscoe as the "devilish" Leading Player, a role created by Ben Vereen in the Broadway production, 34 years ago. "Pippin" is directed by Darlene J. Stewart, music directed by Judith Lynn Stillman, an international award winning pianist, and choreographed by Sandy Barker. The story is the tale of how the son of Charlemagne the Great (played by Ray Wood) found a way to live a life of his own to escape the shadow of his successful father, and to be true to his calling. The play starts with a band of touring players who are here to tell you about Pippin’s journey, and as the play proceeds, the audience is introduced to Pippin’s family and the people who help him along the way to "The Right Track." As Pippin faces temptations, conflict, domesticity, and the trials of love, the audience soon recognizes some of their own "Everyman" dilemmas and joys. The energetic and sensual dance numbers help give substance to the internal conflicts in Pippin’s life.
The show also features Sonia Guyer as Fastrada, Pippin’s stepmother; Jennifer Lee as Catherine, Pippin’s love interest; Matt Vasta as Lewis, Pippin’s stepbrother; Pat Calvin as Berthe, Pippin’s grandmother; and Alex Finkle as Theo, Catherine’s son. The players who make up the ensemble are Katie Pettit, Kimberly A. Whalen-Texter, Julia Gillis Larson, Teresa Lane, Richard Kulp, Denise Fincher, Alice Camarota, Bill Brown, and Natalia Plaza. Honey Crum is the stage manager.
