The Arts in New Smyrna Beachare alive and well

New Smyrna Beach was hopping on Saturday, Dec. 3, when several of the city's art galleries—specifically Arts on Douglas, Harris House and Clay Gallery—held their open houses. Since Harris House is located diagonally across the street from Arts on Douglas and the Clay Gallery is behind Arts on Douglas and directly across from Harris House, the art fancier has a triple treat in store whenever a visit is planned.
On this particular Saturday, we attended the Arts on Douglas opening, held the first weekend of most months. Wine, beer and pretzels or goldfish were available at the reception from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and, this month, 33 of the 56 artists represented by the gallery were on display in the main room. Since other rooms in the
gallery contain ongoing exhibits of various works, in one visit you can view the work of nearly all of the artists. One specific exhibit, The Miniatures Exhibition 2005, is a special challenge to the participating artists because all pieces must be less than 8 inches in size, according to gallery manager Meghan Martin. "Although that can be two or three dimensional," she said. This tiny treat will be on display through January 3, 2006. Whatever your taste in art, you have a good chance of finding it at Arts on Douglas because the gallery interacts and cooperates with Harris House, an auxiliary facility of the Atlantic Center for the Arts. The Gray Room in Arts on Douglas presents art from the works also being shown at Harris House.
This special day, Harris House was also celebrating its own grand reopening after sustaining damage during the 2004 hurricanes. ArtsEtc, the Central Florida fiber and surface design artists group was challenged to do a 4X4 fabric image depicting the impact of the hurricanes. Think little quilts and you will have an idea of the designs. They were all very clever, and some were outstanding. Also, the snacks at here were a little more homey. Wine was offered, but punch, tea sandwiches, fruit and cheese were available, too. Harris House is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
On the other hand, Clay Gallery features the work of Teresa Bowen, and on Gallery Walk night—the first Saturday of each month—she has live jazz music for the browsers to enjoy. Clay Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and by appointment on Sunday. The Mosquito Mud Pottery, located only a couple of blocks away on Canal St., also participates in Gallery Walk. Though we haven't visited the shop yet, we hope to be invited to cover those in the future.
