Welcome to the Microcosm
A Review of the 16th Juried Stetson University Student Art Exhibition
2005-11-17
Article Written by: Charles Griffin

On the evening of Friday, November 11th , anything you had ever hoped to see in art—and probably a few things you probably didn't want to see—were on display at the opening of the 16th Juried Stetson University Student Art Exhibition at the Duncan Gallery of Art within Sampson Hall in Stetson University's central campus. There were video arts, standing art, hanging art and, in the case of some student stylistic choices, walking art. You could peer into a hole in the top of a black box and observe video of other people peering into a hole in the top of a black box, while hearing commentary on the same through a headset.

It was my understanding that the students themselves participated in the jury that selected the art, and I believe that a sense of humor was a prerequisite. You've seen that old joke where a frame is hung over a spot on the wall and it wins a prize. One piece on display had exactly that sort of flavor, if clear plastic that allows you to see the wall qualifies. Another display looked as if a five-year-old was required to place squares on a wall in a symmetrical pattern. Each square represented a word, and one particular word—that would have caused my grandmother to wash my mouth out with soap—was repeated several times, standing out in its simplicity and distinct meaning.

In my opinion, the work of Kelsey Donegan particularly stood out for its texture, its combinations of materials, color and size and its creativity.

I strongly believe that any lover of art will enjoy a visit to this gallery. The student exhibit will be open until December 8th . The Duncan Gallery is inside the main doors to Sampson Hall and is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. The campus will be closed from November 24th to 27th for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Sampson Hall is located just a half-block down Minnesota Ave. inside the Stetson University main entrance off Woodland Blvd. As the road bends to the left, visitor parking is available. The hall is to the right, past a fountain.
